Appleton’s Butchers

Discover a historic butcher shop, famous for its pork pies and range of fresh meats. Offering a hog roast service, it's located in a 1936 landmark building.

Best-known for our pork pies, which have locals queuing round Ripon’s market square, Appleton’s also sells a complete range of fresh pork, hams, cured meat and sausages. We offer a hog roast service for parties, weddings and corporate events.

Appleton’s has been in business since 1867, when nineteen year-old Thomas Appleton started working for Smithson’s butchers in Kirkgate, Ripon. When Mr Smithson died five years later, the business was transferred to Thomas and became T Appleton & Son.

Mr Appleton’s original principle of selecting Yorkshire’s finest meats for the people of Ripon served him well and his butcher’s shop thrived. In 1936 Appleton’s moved into the landmark black-and-white building on the market square it still occupies today. Like the Tudor façade and oak paneling Appleton’s commitment to quality and good value remains unchanged.

In May 2014 Appleton’s of Wetherby opened in the heart of Wetherby. The third shop has recently opened at 19 Lendal, York. And our fourth shop, in Boroughbridge, opened 2017.
