Silhouette Soldiers - The Sentinel
Situated in significant locations across Ripon, the sillhouette soldiers were designed and installed as part of a series of events and commemorations to mark the centenary of the end of the First World War in 2018. Throughought the First World War, (1914-1918), thousands of men were based in Ripon to complete their basic training before being deployed to the various fronts in mainland europe. Additionally, injured and shell shocked soldiers convalesed in Ripon before they either returned to the front lines or were discharged from their service. Most famously, the war poet, Wilfred Owen rented a room on Borrage Lane in the City between March and June 1918. At it's peak, Ripon Camp emcompassed most of the City with 30,000 soldiers calling the camp home.
The silhouette soldiers were created by local artists, Dan Metcalfe, Jeanne Mundy and Joe Priestley and manufactured by Econ.
