St Anne's Chapel

Mediaeval Ruined Chapel

These ruined remains form part of the  of the mediaeval St Anne's Hospital and form part of the chapel. It is currently unknown as to when the hospital was founded but records indicate that the street was referred to as Annesgate in 1228. The remaining architecure suggests that the building is older but the earliest known reference dates back to 1438. The hospital may have been founded by a member of the Neville family and was paid for by alms until 1680 when the earliest endowment was recorded. Historical records also indicate that the hospital was used to support and house 8 widows.
