St Mary's Church - Studley Royal
Victorian Gothic Revival Church
During an aristocratic grand tour in 1870, Frederick Vyner, the son of Lady Mary Vyner of Newby Hall was involved in the Dilessi Massacre and tragically killed in a skirmish between the Greek Army and the bandits who were holding them prisoner. In response to the news, Lady Mary and her daughter, Henrietta, who was married to George Robinson, Earl de Grey and first Marquess of Ripon collectively decided to use the ransom money they had raised to commission renowned architect, William Burges (1827–81) to design and construct two churches in memorial to Frederick. Lady Vyner commissioned Christ the Consoler on the Newby Hall Estate and Henrietta, St Mary's on the Studley Royal Estate.
