The Chapel of St Mary Magdalen (Leper Chapel)

The Chapel of St Mary Magdalen (Leper Chapel)

Small Chapel dating back to the 12th Century.

The Chapel of St Mary Magdalene was founded by Thurstan, Archbishop of York (1114 – 1140) to serve the Hospital (or almshouses) of St Mary Magdalen which stood around it. The hospital had a particular care for lepers and blind priests. The chapel was extensively restored between 1985 & 1990.  (Taken from the Ripon Civic Society Green Plaque in the church yard.)
